Lungs are very important parts of the body as it pumps oxygen to all the other parts of the body. Small dust particles can affect the lungs and reduce them in their functions. A cancer in the lungs can be very dangerous as than they can’t pump oxygen to the body. Chemotherapy for lung cancer is a combination of two or more drugs like paclitaxel and carboplatin, cisplatin and vinorelbine, cisplatin, vinorelbine and tartrate, cisplatin and VP-16, and carboplatin with VP-16. Radiotherapy can also be used in lung cancer with a combination of drugs like cisplatin and VP-16 and carboplatin with VP-16. These medicines are very much effective against lung cancer. Other effective chemotherapy drugs are cyclophosphamide, methotrexate, lomustine and topotecan – hydrochloride.
There are different forms of lung cancer and their treatment is different in chemotherapy. Non-small cell lung cancer is a one type of lung cancer. In this type, it is very difficult to remove and eliminate tumor from the lungs of an individual by surgery. It is very difficult for the person having non-small cell lung cancer to survive a single year without the chemotherapy. Chemotherapy with the drug like gemcitabine hydrochloride is very effective against hard solid cancers and also very effective against non-small cell lungs cancer. Another effective combination for non-small cell lungs cancer is cisplatin, etoposide and radiotherapy.
Small cell lung cancer (limited-stage) is another form of lung cancer. Due to this form of cancer patients have impaired lung functions and poor performance status. Combination chemotherapy with prophylactic cranial irradiation or PCI is very much effective in this form. This chemotherapy has side effects like leukodistrophy (degeneration of brain tissue) which appear one year after surgery and can be very dangerous. It can cause memory alterations, movement abnormalities, and intellectual changes. Combined chemotherapy with etoposide, cisplatin, and chest radiation are also very effective for small cell lung cancer. The side effects of combined chemotherapy are easily managed by patients as they are not much dangerous for the patients. Small cell lung cancer (extensive-stage) is a form of lung cancer in which stage is extensive. Patients can have bigger problems if not treatment by chemotherapy in quick time and after every interval.
Chemotherapy with prophylactic cranial irradiation (PCI) or combination chemotherapy with cyclophosphamide, doxorubicin, and vincristine sulfate is very much effective for this type of lung cancer patients. There are many more combinations which are used by physicians. Etoposide, ifosfamide and carboplatin are other form of combinations. Radiotherapy which is known as radiation therapy should be quiet effective to areas like metastatic which are not affected by combination treatment. Radiation can also be dangerous and show side effects. Patients with no treatment at all are always in danger. Chemotherapy results in better controlled of the lung cancer and improvement in the time span. There are large numbers of organizations which are researching in these types of combinations and chemotherapy by which they can create a treatment without any side effects. There are certain side effects of this chemotherapy which are dangerous and quick to overcome.
